Belgrade Man Sentenced to More than Nine Years in Federal Prison for Running a Drug Scheme

3

Portland - A man authorities say ran a scheme to transport prescription drugs from Florida for resale in Maine, even while he was behind bars, has been sentenced to more than nine years in federal prison.

Curtis Ray Simmons, of Belgrade was sentenced this week in U.S. District Court in Portland after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute oxycodone.

The Kennebec Journal, reports that the 50-year-old Simmons was also ordered to forfeit about $23,000.

Authorities say Simmons made regular trips to Florida for prescription drugs to sell out of his mobile home. A search of the home in August 2010 yielded more than 600 oxycodone pills and about $23,000 in cash.

His wife, 46-year-old Alison Simmons-Murphy, pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to distribute oxycodone and is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 24.
