Morrill -
You can barely see the scar that's put 5-year old Scout in lockdown on Shady Hollow Farm in Morrill, but that's all it took to land Dana Manchester's dog in a 45 day quarantine after it was attacked by a rabid raccoon, Friday morning.
"I heard the raccoon growl and the dog yipped a little bit, and by the time I got over there, I saw the raccoon nip him," said Manchester.
The farm owner first caught site of the raccoon as it made its way into a pigpen. Manchester said, "It was just kind of wandering slow, it went right through the electrical fence."
His dog chased it off and came away with just a small bite, but he's worried it could be more serious.
"He seems to be doing fine so far and fingers crossed that's how it'll stay," said Manchester.
According the Maine Center for Disease Control, there have been 57 rabies cases in the state so far this year, which is only just a few less than totals for 2010 and 2011.
CDC officials said anyone worried their pet has been exposed to the infection, should contact them, as even the smallest encounter can have a major impact. You can call the center at 1-800-821-5821.
