Southwest Harbor -
Lots of kids look up to firefighters, some even want to be a firefighter when they grow up. It's kids like those that signed up for a junior firefighter academy as part of Camp Beech Cliff.
"I thought it would be cool to learn a little more," said Anthony Lawson, a 12-year-old camper from Tremont.
The week-long camp wrapped up on Friday. All week firefighters have been teaching the campers different skills, including putting on gear, using different firefighting tools, and first aid.
Firefighters from Mount Desert, Tremont, Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Acadia National Park teamed up for the camp.
They're teaching the campers that there's a lot more to being a firefighter than meets the eye.
"You think that all they do is put out fires, but they have more to that job," said Elyse Daub, a 13-year-old camper from Bangor.
Chief Mike Bender of the Mount Desert Fire Department said, "We want to teach them the basic skills of firefighting, maybe inspire a little bit of that interest that they may pursue later on when they get older."
These 11 to 14 year olds still have plenty of time to decide what the future holds, but this camp has definitely given them some ideas.
