Convicted Sex Offender Found Guilty on All Counts

3

Bangor - A verdict was handed down just before 6 o'clock Wednesday evening in the trial of convicted sex offender Carey Gonyer of Charleston.

After more than two and a half hours of deliberation, the jury found Gonyer guilty on all counts.

The 43-year-old Gonyer was charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor in the production of pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

Gonyer chose not to take the stand himself during his trial in federal court.

In closing arguments Wednesday afternoon, Assistant U.S. Attorney Stacey Neumann argued Gonyer manipulated a 15-year-old boy into sending him explicit photos.

Detectives say some of those photos were found on memory cards in Gonyer's home that contained other child pornography.

Outside of court after the verdict Neumann said, "There's no doubt the victim's testimony in this case was pivitol and I think the rest of the evidence corroborated his testimony. Clearly the jury thought the same."

During his closing, Gonyer's defense attorney, Hunter Tzovarras, argued the victim is blaming Gonyer for his own decision to take and send those photos. He also argued that this case has no DNA evidence.

"Obviously we're disappointed that the jury didn't see it the way we did, but we respect the decision. We're disappointed and we'll talk about an appeal, " said Tzovarras, after the verdict.

The mandatory minimum sentence for the sexual exploitation charges, based on Gonyer's prior conviction, is 25 years. The minimum sentence for the child pornography charge is 10 years.

Gonyer also faces 10 related state charges of sexual abuse of a minor. Tzovarras said it's not clear yet how this verdict on the federal charges will affect the state case.
