Southwest Harbor -
Federal officials who helped push through money for a new police station in Southwest Harbor toured the facility for the first time Wednesday.
The head of the USDA Rural Development for Housing and Community Facilities program was among those who wanted to see the results of the major remodeling project.
The program provided $380,000 to expand the police station two-and-a-half years ago.
At the time, there was only one room for dispatchers and one room for officers, who also had to share a computer.
Police Chief David Chapais says the station has quadrupled in size.
"We have areas for each officer, we have space for evidence storage, we have an interview room, we have a male and female bathroom, which we didn't have before. We had one bathroom that was shared."
The building also has a larger area for dispatchers.
The public lobby was expanded, too, and is now handicapped accessible.
