Number of Homeless Residents Seeking Shelter in Portland Hits Highest Level in Fifteen Years

Portland - The average number of homeless residents seeking nightly shelter in Portland last month climbed to its highest level since the city began keeping track 15 years ago.

Officials say there was an average of 411 people in city shelters in June, up from 354 in the same month a year ago.

Mayor Michael Brennan calls the trend disturbing.

The city began using the Preble Street Resource Center as an overflow shelter for 75 people last year, but now officials have also been forced to open a General Assistance office where some people are sleeping on chairs.

Brennan tells the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/N1BvJg ) that it's "unacceptable" for people to spend the night in a chair in an office because there's no other place for them to sleep.
