Orland -
Police say a man was killed this morning after driving his car head-on into a tree stump in Orland.
64-year old Edward Sargent of Sullivan died at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth.
The crash happened along Route 1 in Orland at the Surry Road intersection just after 9 a.m.
Donna Conary was inside her house when she heard the sound of breaking glass from her yard.
She ran outside, called 911, and reported that Sargent was breathing but not responsive.
Conary said this is one of many accidents she's seen in her area and she urged drivers to slow down.
"Number one: stay awake. Pay attention to the signs that tell you to slow down. I'm a big advocate for that because my husband works on the road everyday, and my husband and myself also see what happens when people don't pay attention or fall asleep or whatever," said Conary.
Police say Sargent was not wearing a seatbelt.
