How Couples Mess-up Finances

3

An article in Reuters provided some eye-opening statistics and suggested your money & relationship strategy.

The Problem- People who fight about money ONCE a WEEK are 30% more likely to get divorced. Almost twice as many arguments begin with money (27%) than over kids (16%) or chores (13%). The same article reported that nearly HALF of people have lied to their partner about money! That's no joke. I've been married 36 years. There's serious trouble when there's lying in a marriage.

Discuss your money- You're old enough to get married. Then you need to be mature enough, bold enough, to openly discuss your money, spending habits, debts and difficulties. You need to agree on compromises that really work and will be sustainable. It's is very common to speak with a third-person to help you work things through. Call a financial advisor or counselor. It usually only takes one chat and things are negotiated.

Agree to Your Plan- Money is more than an item used in lieu of barter. There are emotional connections that we unwittingly hold. We have different money personalities and insecurities. But when you come up with a good plan that you can both commit to, honor each other by faithfully follow it. Once you've made an agreement, stick with it. If it needs adjusting discuss it. Don't be sneaky. Have a talk about what's not working and ways to adjust the plan to be more appropriate.

Money discussions can make or break a relationship. These are simple steps to have a healthy relationship.
