Officials Announce MaineCare Shortfall Has Been Avoided

3

Augusta - State Department of Health and Human Services officials say what had been expected to be a $12.5 million shortfall in MaineCare has been avoided.

The budget gap had threatened to delay payments to health care providers who treat patients in the state Medicaid program.

Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said much of the gap was covered by reimbursements to the program from other departments as well as $3 million in higher rebates from drug companies.

The anticipated shortfall did not result in any cut in benefits.

The total budget for MaineCare is more than $3 billion, and officials say forecasting costs are difficult.
