Firefighters Treated for Heat Exhaustion

3

Etna - Fire damaged a house in Etna Monday.

It started around 10:30am at a house on West Etna Road.

As TV 5 found out, the weather didn't make things any easier for fire crews.

Firefighters are used to the heat, but sometimes, it's even too hot for them to handle.

" The heat has gotten to all the firefighters. It's been an extensive work effort to get the structure fire put out," said Chief Shawn Ryder with the Etna Fire Department.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with heat exhaustion and several others were treated at the scene.

" It's hot in the house in the air conditioning, so it's got to be doubly hot out there," said Kathy Picken.

Picken lives nearby and wanted to do something to help.

" Called a few local stores, they gave water, Gatorade and sandwiches to help these guys while they're helping some other family like they did us," said Picken.

Last year, Kathy's son and soon-to-be step son were killed in a car crash in Carmel. Now, she tried to give back any way she can.

" Since the boys passed away, your heart changes and your thought process changes. You wanna help the people who helped you," explained Picken.

She's not the only one who wanted to help. Members of the Carmel Fire Auxiliary stopped by too.

" I asked what they needed and someone said ice cream, so I brought ice cream," said Donna Stanhope with the Carmel Fire Auxiliary.

It wasn't just the heat that made this fire hard to fight.

" The house, as far as we can tell, has been renovated multiple times, which has made it a challenge to find the actual fire to get the fire out," said Ryder.

Crews from twelve towns and the State Fire Marshal's Office were called in.

They've determined an electrical malfunction caused the fire. Now, it's time for the firefighters to cool down.
