Oxford Casinos Development Permits Nullified by Judge

3

Oxford - An Oxford casino may close just weeks after it opened after a judge nullified its development permit.

The Sun Journal of Lewiston reported, that Superior Court Justice Michaela Murphy invalidated the permit Wednesday, and parties to the suit learned Saturday.

Murphy agreed with the Androscoggin River Alliance, which appealed the permit granted by the Maine Board of Environmental Protection. The alliance argued the board wrongly granted the permit after considering just the first phase of the three-phase project.

An alliance attorney said the ruling means the casino must close. But a lawyer for the casino owner, Black Bear Development, said that's not true. He said the ruling deals with technical aspects of one permit. He said his clients haven't decided how to proceed.

The casino opened in June and hoped to expand this fall.
