MTA Toll Hike Voting Postponed

The Maine Turnpike Authority has postponed voting on a plan to hike tolls. At a meeting Thursday, they spent time talking about the e-z pass.

140,000 drivers in Maine use e-z pass.

Turnpike officials say it cuts operating costs, and drivers save because pass holders pay less than those who pay in cash.

The newest plan to hike tolls does include increases for easy pass drivers too.

Right now they pay under $.07 per mile, the proposal is to raise that to $.08.

And the plan calls for the York toll plaza price to go up by $1.

Gardiner and New Gloucester tolls would increase by $.50.

The MTA is looking at scaling back some of the proposed toll increases by delaying some construction projects.
A final decision will be made at the next meeting on August 2nd.

The decision will come with a written explanation of how the increases were decided in response to the public criticism of the hikes.
