State Regulators Reaffirm Expansion of Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town

Old Town - Maine environmental officials are reaffirming a decision to allow expansion of the Juniper Ridge Landfill in Old Town.

The Board of Environmental Protection voted Thursday at the Augusta Civic Center to deny an appeal of a state Department of Environmental Protection decision allowing the landfill to expand. The appeal was filed by Ed Spencer of Old Town.

The state-owned landfill accepts residues from waste-to-energy facilities, construction and demolition debris and other wastes generated within Maine.

Meanwhile, the Legislature's Government Oversight Committee agreed Thursday to delay a decision on whether to order a review contracts and agreements related to the operation and management of Juniper Ridge. The review by the Office of Program Evaluation and government Accountability would cover contracts between the state and Casella Waste, the operator of Juniper Ridge.
