Unknown to Louisiana Sheriff How Escaped Inmate Caught in Maine Stole Car

A Louisiana sheriff says he doesn't know how an escaped inmate stole and drove an unmarked police car 1,800 miles to Maine, but Sheriff Rickey Jones says it won't happen again.

Benjamin Gottke, 43, was a trustee in the Tensas Parish Sheriff's Office kitchen.

Last week, he got his hands on keys to an unmarked cruiser and took off.

Police say he was arrested in Maine Saturday shortly after trying to enter Canada.

He had about nine months left to serve for burglary in Louisiana.

Now, he faces charges in Maine including resisting arrest, and escape and car theft charged in Louisiana.

Sheriff Jones says Gottke's escape will make him rethink how the trustee program works.
