Maine A.G. Warns of Utility Bill Scam

3

Augusta - Maine's Attorney General is warning Mainers of a scam claiming the federal government will pay your utility bills.

A.G. William J. Schneider says the scam works by asking for the customer's social security number and banking information in order to set up a payment plan through a fictional government assistance program.

Perpetrators of this scam in other states have sent out text messages, tweets, facebook postings, even going door to door with flyers all in an attempt to make the scam seem more legitimate.

"We want Mainers to realize that scammers will use the names well-known local companies, government officials, and other notable people to convince you that their offer is legitimate," said Attorney General Schneider. "Don't fall for it."

If you think you may have fallen victim to this, or any other scam, call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 626-8849
