Rabies Cases Expected to Spike say Officials

Public health officials expect a spike in the number of rabies cases in Maine this year after a litter of puppies was euthanized in Thorndike following an encounter with a rabid skunk.

The number of confirmed rabies cases in the state has been about 65 in each of the last three years.

There have already been more than 50 confirmed cases this year, putting on state on pace to break 100.

Dr. Sheila Pinette, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control, says the mild winter probably has something to do with the spike.

Mike Topich tells the Morning Sentinel a rabid skunk burrowed into his dog pen, forcing him to euthanize a litter of 11 2-month-old puppies. He also needed treatment after killing the skunk with his bare hands.
