Bradley -
A museum in Bradley gave hundreds of families a glimpse of Maine's history this weekend. The Maine Forest and Logging Museum transported guests to a time when things were much simpler with their Living History Days at Leonard's Mills.
"It's old, and the beds they made are made out of not mattresses, but they're made out of straw," said 8-year old Jimmy Green of Etna.
As Green and his friends learned, the styles of today are a little different from what they were in late eighteenth century Maine. From dress to cooking to sleeping, 1790's Mainers might think we all have it pretty easy.
"I can't believe people actually slept on them," said Owen Butler, 8, of Bangor.
Green and Butler were just two out of a crowd of hundreds who visited the historic site Saturday and Sunday. The Maine Forest and Logging Museum named the place after Oliver Leonard, one of the town's earliest settlers and mill owners.
"This mill was actually built on, approximately, the site of the original mill from 1790. A bunch of guys got together and thought we ought to really preserve Maine logging history, so fifty years ago they started this museum," said Sherry Davis, the museum's interim executive director.
Twice a year, they host the event in order to give visitors a chance to slow down the pace of their everyday lives, and step back into a time when the lifestyle was much simpler.
