Stray and Feral Cats Damaging Homes in Veazie Neighborhood

Veazie - Hobson Avenue in Veazie is getting a little too crowded these days now that some unwanted neighbors have moved in.

"They've built up to be a colony now," said the town's Animal Control Officer, Joseph Murphy.

About 30 stray cats have come to call the street home.

"They've been reproducing. We have at least two litters of kittens out here," said Murphy, who is tasked with reigning them all in.

He started laying traps Tuesday and has caught two of them, so far.

"It's damaging people's property. There's an abandoned trailer, if you look underneath, you can see where they've pulled the insulation down. They're under there clawing on wires. The skirts are missing in several places from these cats," said Murphy.

The trouble now, though, is determining if the animals have spent too much time in the wild to be adopted. That's where the Bangor Humane Society comes in.

"We've had one kitten, so far. Right now, that cat is in receiving, it's a little skittish," said Stacey Coventry, who works at the shelter.

The humane society will evaluate the cats to see if they're feral, and if so, pass them on to a rescue group.

"If they all come to us like this little kitten, who is just really scared and skittish, then that's a good sign that they'll be able to be rehabilitated and re-homed," said Coventry.

If they can't find a place for the wild cats, euthanizing them is a possibility.

"It is not a first resort. It's not a matter of we get a call and animals come and go straight to the euthanizing room," said Coventry.

The hope is that after moving them out of this home, they'll be able to place them in another.
