When you get older, birthdays sometimes become less exciting, but not this year for Janet Cassio. The lifelong Maine resident is turning 100 years old on Thursday.
"I feel okay, it seems to me I haven't thought about it too much," said Cassio at her birthday celebration on Tuesday.
To help her celebrate, her children and grandchildren travelled from all over the country to be in Maine.
"She had 6 kids and we had a lovely family. We all appreciate her. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress and what have you," said Allen "Joe" Cassio, Janet's oldest son.
Family joined residents and staff members at Cummings Health Care Facility on Tuesday. The nursing home organized the get together for their resident who has begun to feel like family.
"She loves to joke, she loves to visit, you can always see her with a smile on her face doing her crosswords or watching her soap operas," said Nicole Clukey, Social Services Director at Cummings Health Care Facility.
Janet said she doesn't spend too much time thinking about her age.
She said, "You know, some people ask me if I feel old. I say, 'You know it never dawned on me, I didn't think about it.'"
Janet said she doesn't know the secret to living a long, healthy life, but it just might be in her genes. Janet's mother lived to be 104.
