Updated- Cause of Death Released for Hermon Man Involved in Officer Shooting

3

Hermon - A Hermon man at the center of an officer involved shooting Sunday night died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

That's according to the Attorney General's office.

A spokeswoman tells TV-5 that 24 year old Michael McKay was shot in the leg during an armed confrontation with the State Police Tactical team.

However, an autopsy by the Medical Examiner's office shows that was not a fatal wound.

According to the A-G's office, McKay threatened people in Kenduskeag Sunday afternoon. State police tell us he shot at a vehicle.

Authorities then followed McKay to his home on Buck Lane in Hermon.

"Where law enforcement responded with Penobscot County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police," says Lt. Col. Raymond Bessette with Maine State Police. "While at that location, there was an exchange of gunfire and Mr. McKay is deceased as a result of that gunfire exchange."

The officer who shot McKay is identified by the Attorney General's office as Gregory Roy with the State Police Tactical team. A previous report by WABI-TV shows that Roy was sworn in as a State Police trooper in December of 2009.

Trooper Roy has been placed on paid administrative leave while the Ag's office completes its investigation, something we're told is standard protocol.

It's sad to know this could have been prevented. I was just told that police prevented my brother-in-law from entering the road that lead to his trailer...he was the only one that could have talked Mike out of it. They were talking on the phone and they still would not let him through to be a negotiator...Police could have at least let him through, if it were his wife, they would have allowed her...Shame on the State Police...a 24-year-old died because they let him die...
