Drunk Driving in Maine on the Decline

Portland - Drunk driving in Maine is down over the past decade.

Figures show a 25% drop off in drunken driving arrests in the pine tree state, but officials are not sure what these numbers mean.

Some police experts say fewer people are taking the chance of driving under the influence because of harsher penalties, but others say the decline could be due to cutbacks in law enforcement and the increasing demand on officers.

Portland police Sgt. Scot Mattox says that while police staffing's been reduced, there's "a cultural shift" away from drinking and driving.
