Update- Hiker Rescue Successfully Completed

Millinocket - A 68 year old hiker was rescued off Mount Katahdin Sunday.

A spokesman with Baxter State Park says Chet Rubackis of Winter Harbor became exhausted while descending a steep and rocky ridge on the Hunt Trail in the park late Saturday night.

The ranger at Katahdin Stream Campground was notified by the hiker's companion around 1 a.m. Sunday morning.

Park staff assembled a search team and hiked up to the tired hiker at 3,600 feet elevation. They reached Rubackis around 8 a.m.

An evacuation down the mountain with Rubackis began four hours later. We're told he reached the bottom at 11 p.m. Sunday night.

Rubackis was taken to Millinocket Regional Hospital to be checked out. Authorities say he appeared to be OK.

Close to 40 people, including the Maine Warden Service and Maine Forest Service helped with the rescue.
