Bangor -
Maine's most popular sweet treat brought thousands of people to Dover-Foxcroft Saturday.
The annual Maine Whoopie Pie Festival kicked off Saturday morning.
From traditional to non-traditional flavors like creamsicle, red velvet and mint, guests could enjoy samples from local bakers.
The festival doesn't just satisfy tastebuds, it helps raise money for the Center Theatre in town.
"It's good Maine fun, it's something I think a lot of people enjoyed as a child and it's a bit of that childhood sweetness that we're all looking for," said festival organizer Patrick Myers. Myers estimates about 5-thousand people attended the event.
Vendors say the exposure is also pretty sweet.
"It's good advertising and it gets the word out that allergy friendly Vegan food can be tasty and not taste like cardboard," said Sarah Campbell, the owner of Irish Daisy Bakery.
Our own Joy Hollowell and Rob Lydick had the difficult task of judging the whoopie pie contest.
Best Traditional went to Governor's. There was a tie for Best Non-Traditional that went to Labree's with their red velvet whoopie pie and Cupcakes, Etc. with a Paul Bunyan themed whoopie pie.
People's choice went to Eastbrook Variety.
