A flight that was diverted to Bangor International Airport Wednesday night safely departed for its destination Thursday.
A Scandinavian Airline plane was headed from Newark, New Jersey to Copenhagen, Denmark when it made the emergency landing in Bangor because of smoke in the cockpit.
None of the nearly 250 passengers on board were injured, but three crew members had to be taken to a local hospital for smoke inhalation. Airport officials said they were released soon after.
The flight is the second to be diverted to the airport in less than a month, which interim airport director, Tony Caruso, said is in part due to their location. BIA is the eastern-most port of entry to the U.S., and the staff there has become used to emergency landings.
"Since 2005, the airport has had just under 650 diversions, but those are different, those range from everything from weather to medical or mechanical, like we had last night. Since that time period, 21 have been related to safety or security reasons," said Caruso.
He said Wednesday's emergency was due to a mechanical problem in the cockpit, which a technician for the airline took care of before the plane departed Thursday.
