Money Troubles Continue in MaineCare

3

Maine's human services commissioner says stubborn financial problems in the state's Medicaid program will delay payments to some health care providers from June to July.

Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew on Monday told the Legislature's Appropriations Committee that the delayed MaineCare payments to providers are the result of a $12.5 million shortfall. Higher than expected costs in some areas, including prescription drugs, caused the problem.

The Kennebec Journal in Augusta also reports that the state is trying to collect money that was overpaid to providers in the last year. So far, the state's collected $7 million and is sending notices to those who owe another $4 million.

The overpayments were caused by continued computer billing problems at the department.
