Hiker Drowns in Somerset County

Bowtown Township - An Appalachian Trail hiker died Saturday while swimming in Somerset County.

The Maine Warden Service says a 20-year-old hiker drowned after trying to swim in a rural western Maine pond.

Witnesses say the man hiked nearly 20 miles earlier in the day. He then tried to swim across a small cove of Pierce Pond in Bowtown Township in Somerset County.

Rescuers found his body in nearly 15 feet of water, but could not retrieve him.

The victims name has not be released.
