Cindy Whitney, Volunteer Program Coordinator for Penquis Foster Grandparent Program is here to talk about the program.
Foster Grandparent Program is for individuals age 55 and over who want to volunteer to work with children or teens in one-on-one and small group settings like schools and child care settings like our local Head Start Centers.
Foster Grandparents are there to support those children who for whatever reason need a little extra encouragement, care and support who otherwise could fall through the cracks. (brief example or quote from a Foster Grandparent)
A stipend is given for hours volunteered (cannot say paid) to the Foster grandparent for hours worked and the program provides assistance with transportation and meals.
The Foster Grandparent Program is "looking for people to sign up now for the upcoming school year.
People are usually are not aware of how large our service area is or how many volunteer hours this program contributes each year (# of hours). The Penquis Foster Grandparent program covers all of Maine except York & Cumberland counties.
May 6-12 is National Senior Corps Week. Senior Corps are the 3 programs for seniors under the Corporation for National and Community Service grants (Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, & RSVP).
May also happen to be Older Americans Month.
