Military Dad "Pops" In For Dinner, Thanks To R2D2

2

Bangor - The head of the Smiley family dinner table is missing these days.

Lieutenant Commander Dustin Smiley was deployed overseas back in November.

Starting this January, Sarah Smiley and her kids decided to invite one guest a week to fill his seat at the dinner table.

Thursday night, a unique guest rolled in.

Owen, Ford, and Lindell Smiley are huge "Star Wars" fans.

Ford fills us in on the guest for this week's dinner with the Smiley's "It's a robot replica of R2D2."

It's a pretty cool guest to invite to the table, but even R2D2 can't compare.

Sarah Smiley says she wishes it could be her husband at the table "I would love Dustin to be one of our guest."

The creator of this R2D2 replica, Paul Bussiere, pulled a few strings and was able to surprise the family and bring Lt. Commander Smiley to life in his own living room.

Bussiere explains "I had seen the other things that her other guest had done and I wanted to do something a little special, unusual."

Paul took a video clip that Lt. Commander Smiley sent him, fashioned it into a hologram design, and projected it though R2D2...almost like a scene from "Star Wars"

Ford Smiley wasn't sure what to think at first, "At first when it was all still shaping into dad, I was like what is going on. Then I realized oh my gosh, that's dad."

Next week's dinner guest is still a surprise, but it looks like R2D2 will be a tough act to follow.

Sarah Smiley says it's "Something the boys will never forget for sure."

I recognize, Ford, one of the boys in the surprise, from our area schools (Pace, Fl). What a great surprise! I have a big Star Wars fan at my house, too!
