Engineering Expo Held at University of Maine

2

Orono - The University of Maine's field house was taken over by engineers.

The expo features the state's top engineering firms, schools and educators.

Many featured hands-on activities.

Time Warner sponsored the event. They had a fiber optic cable splice on display.

More than 1,500 school children were there, which organizers say is important.

"It's so critical we address America's declining efficiency in science technology, engineering, and math. So what a lot of the private companies are here for is to really help spread the word. We need the next generation of engineers," said Time Warner Cable New England Communications Manager, Andrew Russell.

"Engineers are critical to solving some of the biggest problems in the world today. Rather it be energy, clean environment, advancement in medicine. Engineers are at the core of that," said Dean of Engineering for University of Maine, Dana Humphrey.

Organizers say the children seemed very interested and they hope it's made them think about pursuing a career in engineering.
