Acadia National Park, Bass Harbor - A woman who's being called tough as nails is recovering after crawling down a mountain in Acadia National Park for seven hours.

Park Rangers say the 57-year-old woman from Bass Harbor injured her ankle Wednesday afternoon while hiking alone on Mansell Mountain.

Her friend called rangers about 5:30 p.m. when she didn't hear from the woman, who told others where she'd be for the day.

A team of 11 rangers from the park and a half-a-dozen volunteers from MDI Search and Rescue went looking for the woman.

She was found around 7:30 p.m. on Cold Brook Trail.

It took rescuers about 20 minutes to carry her in a litter less than a half-a-mile to the bottom of the trial.

Ranger Ed Pontbriand says the woman was not hypothermic and was fully prepared for the hike, with proper clothing and footwear, including ice grippers over her hiking boots.

Besides saying she's tough as nails, Ranger Richard Rechholtz says the woman's a survivor.

She was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth.

Rangers says they don't know her condition or if she's still there. The hospital is not releasing that information.

Rechholtz is giving a lot of credit to search and rescue team for helping find the woman so quickly.

The volunteers and park rangers has just completed a joint training on search and rescue missions, Tuesday night.
