Bangor - The Republican caucuses don't start in Maine for another week, but GOP candidate Ron Paul is already visiting.

His first stop, Bangor.

Paul says he wants to know why it is that radicals are now in charge of our government?

"Because we want changes they want to make it sound terrible, but what's wrong with balancing budget? Is there anything wrong with that? No, that sounds like a good idea to me," said Republican Presidential Candidate, Ron Paul.

The Texas congressman says he would cut spending by a trillion dollars in the first year.

He also spoke about rights to freedom.

"We should never have to give up or never be tempted to give up any liberty to be safer because it won't make us any safer," said Paul.

Paul talked about the national debt he says has ballooned because of wars. He thinks troops need to be sent home and spend their money in the United States.

He has developed a following of younger voters.

"I think he's definitely attracting a younger audience, but also a broad spectrum of an audience. Just a lot of people who really want to make a difference nowadays, instead of just sitting back and letting the government do everything," said University of Maine student, Tionna Baldwin.

"The freedom movement is alive and well and it's growing now. I use to think of it as a few young people and remnant. Now the remnant is coming alive and the number of young people joining the cause is growing by leaps and bounds. The momentum is there," said Paul.

Those attending say they believe in what Paul stands for.

"We just wanted to see him up close and personal. We agree with everything he's proposing and we just want to help return the United States to a Constitutional Republic," said Susan Johnson of Frankfort.

"I've always liked some parts of his areas. Especially on international affairs, bringing the troops back," said Tom Taylor of Orono.

Paul also visited Colby College Friday afternoon and will be in Lewiston Friday night.

He will be speaking in Freeport, Alfred and Gorham Saturday.
