Lincoln -
What police can tell us is that 6-year-old Sophia Nelson was hit by her school bus on her way home on Wednesday. What police don't know yet is how this accident happened.
Lincoln Police Chief Bill Lawrence happened to come across the scene on Clark and Ariel Streets in Lincoln. He quickly noticed that the little girl was severely injured.
"We called for the ambulance and the child at that time was speaking and conscious. She was picked up by the ambulance and taken to Penobscot Valley Hospital and later transported by lifeflight to EMMC," said Lawrence.
Sophia's mother told police that her daughter has a broken femur bone as well as fractures in her skull and neck.
The police investigation so far has included testing the bus driver's blood alcohol content and the mechanics on the bus.
The traumatic incident for students on the bus and those who just heard about it has caused the school district to take action. Superintendent Denise Hamlin says she's carrying out RSU 67's crisis response plan.
"We have guidance counselors and social workers and our school pyschologists that are set up to work with students and staff at our Ella P. Burr Elementary School and Mattanawcook Junior High School. We have also offered services to the family if need be," said Hamlin.
She says she has spoken with the Nelson family.
"I spoke to the mom this morning, she seems to be upbeat. The student is telling jokes," said Hamlin.
She says students are being reminded about bus safety and the guidance counselors and social workers will be offering help as long as the students need it.
Meantime, the investigation into the accident continues. We're told the bus driver has been placed on administrative leave for now.
