Bangor -
The Sheriff of Penobscot County, a Piscataquis County Commissioner and an emergency room doctor from Houlton are some of those that make up the new committee to advocate keeping the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center open.
The Bangor City Council released the names Monday.
There are 13 members in all.
The psychiatric center faces major cuts to its budget.
If it closes, Rivervew in Augusta would become the only publicly run psychiatric center in the state.
The city of Bangor says many people volunteered to sit on the committee.
It is now charged with providing a clear indication of the concern in Northern and Eastern Maine, to keep the Bangor facility open..
An initial meeting is set for January 19th at 3 p.m. at Bangor City Hall.
Anyone is welcome to attend.
Joining Councilors Joe Baldacci and Nelson Durgin, the following people have agreed to serve: Dale Hamilton, CHCS; Glenn Ross, Sheriff, Penobscot County; Tom Lizotte, Piscataquis County Commissioner; Butch Asselin, Chief of Police, Houlton; Dennis Marble, CEO, Bangor Area Homeless Shelter; Joe Pickering, Retired CEO and consumer parent; Steve Letourneau, CEO, Catholic Charities Maine; Christian Andersen, Emergency Room M.D., Houlton Regional Hospital; Sharon Tomah, Wabanaki Mental Health and Judy Street, E.R. Head, St. Joseph Hospital. The City is awaiting confirmation on a name of a professional representing Eastern Maine Healthcare. Shawn and the committee have chosen to ignore the experiences of the patients. They ignore or disregard what this issue means to the patients within the hospital and by doing so perpetuate the very worst of the biases that those who deal with this illness have to endure.
If the exclusion of the patient's interests represents ''a broad spectrum'' both Shawn and Baldacci need to look again at why they are fighting for the continued operation of DDPC.
This has all the feel of a self congratulatory cavalry unit riding to the rescue of those unfortunates who will always need to be cared for.
