Augusta Small Business Expanding

Augusta - Augusta based Kennebec Technologies is expanding. Governor LePage did the honors, cutting the ribbon on a 4000 foot expansion project using a set of electric scissors. The company's owner, Wick Johnson, says they've weathered a tough 2009 and have now hired or rehired 25 employees and invested more than $2-million to purchase new equipment. The new wing will add 5-10 more jobs. "We have employees who have worked here a year, 5 years, 10 years,15 up to 25 and 30 years. It's a very experienced workforce and they've shown an immense commitment to the company," Johnson said Monday.

Kennebec Technologies manufactures components that are used by companies like GE and Boeing to name a few. Many of those parts had been outsourced to places like India and China but are now back being made right here in Augusta. "There is a lot of positive action going on in the state," Governor LePage told the crowd that included employees and lawmakers. "And what better way to start 2012 then to see this establishment open a 4000 foot edition."

Those state lawmakers and city councilors joined Augusta Mayor Bill Stokes to celebrate Monday's announcement. "This is a great opportunity I think to recognize what's going on in the city of Augusta," Stokes said. "We have said on the council this city is poised for a tremendous amount of progress and prosperity."
