Bangor - Every royal city needs its crown jewel.

" We're saving one of the icons of the Queen City," said Karl Ward, president and CEO of Nickerson & O'Day, Inc..

And every crown jewel, needs a shining once in a while.

" It's about 160 years old, showing some signs of stress and we're approaching it and restoring it so it lasts at least another 160 years," said Ward.

The Hammond Street Congregational Church stands majestically in downtown Bangor.

" Old buildings like this, it's important to the fabric of this grand old Queen City," said Ward.

Workers with Nickerson & O'Day, Inc. have the duty of fixing up one of the highest points in the city.

" We actually replaced all of the main, huge originally hand hewn wooden beans that goes up at an angle to form the steeple. We had to pull them out one at a time to make sure it stayed stable while we were doing it," described Ward.

The steeple is commanding at 140 feet high and holds a lot of history.

" We have clocks that were installed when Lincoln was president and Hannibal Hamlin was vice president," pointed out Ward.

So far, all of the work has gone off royally.

" The biggest issue we had was the pigeon guano," laughed Ward.

Workers plan to be done imposing on Bangor's regal gem in a bit more than a fortnight.

We're told the project is a head of schedule and under budget.
