Augusta -
Maine Demcoratic leaders want to hear from you. Thursday morning, they outlined their plans to do just that.
Democrats gathered on the steps of the state house and opened their remarks by chastising Republicans, accusing them of not working to create jobs. "But where was the focus on jobs?" asked House Minority Leader Emily Cain of Orono. "Rolling back voting rights will not create jobs. Rolling back environmental protections will not create jobs. And rolling back health insurance laws and adding in new taxes to everyone's insurance policy will not create jobs."
Ben Grant, Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party continued the verbal assault on Republicans. "The LePage republicans are pushing a radical agenda designed to settle old scores and appease the tea party faction of the Republican party."
Democrats announced the launch of their new "Get Real Maine Tour" They'll travel all over the state to hear first-hand what people want from the leadership in Augusta. "We'll be meeting and talking with real Maine people," Grant said. "From fishermen to farmers. Loggers to business owners. School teachers to state workers. To figure out what they need and how to get it for them."
After hearing the Democrats harsh critique of their performance in the last legislative session, Republican leaders fired back. "Well I think it's great that the Democrats in Augusta have thought that they should go out and ask real Maine working people what they should do for an agenda," House Majority Leader Bob Nutting of Oakland said.
Nutting says the notion that the Republican controlled legislature hasn't done much to create jobs is premature, since the ink on new legislation isn't even dry yet. "So to say that our policies to improve the business climate in Maine, we haven't done anything, is just foolishness," Nutting said, "you will see the results of this in the fall and next year."
Maine voters will have the chance to tell the Democratic leaders exactly what they think over the next few months. To see the Get Real Maine tour schedule and get all the information about the tour you can log on to there website. www.mainedems.org/real.
