Newburgh - More changes in Newburgh.

What was supposed to be a routine meeting Thursday night turned into much more.

The town of Newburgh is generally a quiet place.

" Hometown of Ricky Craven," said Delmer Terrill, a longtime resident.

Lately, the community has been marked by scandal. Former Deputy Town Treasurer, Cindy Dunton, pleaded guilty to stealing $200,000 from the town.

" No investigation has done what it should do and that's go deep enough to who else was responsible," said Terrill.

In March, two selectmen resigned, and at the most recent Board of Selectmen meeting, Town Manager Rick Briggs, Town Clerk Lois Libby and Assistant Town Clerk Jill Gilman quit.

Volunteers have already changed the locks at the town office and as the sign shows, it's closed until further notice.

For residents, they want answers.

" Lots of divided opinions, they want to get down to the truth," said Terrill.

Why did these three people resign? Most folks we spoke with say a lot of the blame lies with a group calling themselves the " Newburgh Fixers".

" Which are doing more damage to the town than they are good," said Terrill.

In previous interviews with the fixers, they've told TV5 they're outraged at town officials and want to turn Newburgh around.

Many people feel it's not that simple and it's not what the fixers are doing.

" It's gonna take a lot of hard work and a lot of cooperation between the town people and the selectmen," said Terrill.

Eric Conrad, Director of Communications for the Maine Municipal Association, says what's happening in Newburgh is rare and the next steps are for the selectboard to begin the hiring process.

" The clerk is a really important job in terms of keeping a town hall going on a day to day basis, that would be a good place to start," said Conrad.

For now, residents say they want to be able to move on, regain trust and get their normally quiet town back on the right track.

We attempted to contact Rick Briggs, Lois Libby and Jill Gilman but our calls have not been returned.

We also put in calls to some of the " Newburg Fixers" and have not heard back.
