Unity - During the Christmas holidays Unity's Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm offered folks a chance to rent an alpaca.

As part of Earth Day they are inviting renters into the farm to spend time with their alpacas.

"We very quickly took in over 50 renters. We've stopped it at around 53 or 54 because we really want to give our renters as much quality time as possible."

Alpaca farm owner, Robin Fowler says they've received great feedback.

"It's just for sometime there's been a disconnect about what Alpacas are really for. Maybe some misconceptions about the price or how much work is involved in raising them or why you want to raise them. So our real goal was to reach people all the different reasons you might want to raise them."

Meghan Agrell rents an alpaca.

"It was a Christmas present from my husband. He's known that ever since I was middle-school aged I've loved Alpacas, Llamas, any sort of farm animal but I've really had a big interest in Alpacas."

Agrell says the rental program has been quite educational.

"I learned a lot about their care that I wouldn't have necessarily known before, they're really unique.'

She hopes to own a few alpacas someday.

And being part of the program is a good stepping stone.

"They get to see the Alpaca travel through it's whole calendar year which involves everything from the husbandry aspect, the sheering, birthing et cetera."

Starting in the fall, they'll start to open up the rent-an-alpaca program to more people.
