Bangor -
Brewer residents now have to pay for the amount of waste they throw away.
It's called "Pay As You Throw" and Bangor could soon follow Brewer's lead.
Here's how it works residents buy a city approved bag and fill it with their trash.
140 communities in Maine currently utilize "Pay As You Throw."
City Engineer Jim Ring says Bangor has been looking at programs to help reduce its tax rate.
The discussions to bring the program to Bangor are in the early stages, but councilors could adopt it as part of next year's budget.
