We will officially ring in the new winter season at 6:28pm. At that time, the suns rays will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn. This invisible line that circulates around the globe is located at 23.5° latitude south of the equator. So what is the big deal you ask????

This does a few things for us. From here on until the summer solstice in June, the amount of daylight we experience will grow. Additionally, we will begin to see the temperatures climb because of the increases amount of sunlight. However, it will take a few more weeks for the air to respond to the extra energy from the sun.

Also, it is interesting to note that despite this time being the coldest part of the year, the Earth is about 3 million miles closer to the sun than when the summer solstice takes place.
