Dedham - Kids helping kids, that's exactly what is happening at the Dedham School.

Students hosted an assembly Wednesday to give pajamas, stuffed animals and books to victims of domestic violence.

"Oh my word, it was a completely overwhelming experience it literally brought me to tears," said Amanda Cost, a director at Spruce Run, a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Cost was overcome with emotion when she received hundreds of pajamas on behalf of the shelter.

The Dedham School collected the pajamas to give to kids who stay at the shelter.

"It was an overwhelming experience. We received over 133 pajamas, books to accompany them and stuffed animals," Cost said.

Cost was greeted by the students with a special song and dance rendition of "Waka Waka," a song about literacy. This was the first time the school collected items for the shelter.

"We live in a great community where people are giving year round and it's really nice during the holiday season cause that's when children typically learn to give and that carries them forward," Cost said.

The school teamed up with the publishing company, Scholastic, which donated books.

Teacher Annie Goodwin says she was amazed by how quickly it took off, especially the pajama collection.

"We were happy with 25 and before we knew it we were at 100 and then we surpassed that, we were ecstatic."

The school also got some help from some big name companies.

"Wal Mart is donating 100 dollars and Ty Beanie Babies donated 144 beanie babies."

Books, stuffed animals and pajamas, altogether, the items create the perfect recipe for a good night's sleep for children who need it most.
