Rockport -
A resort on the Midcoast is getting a bit of a makeover.
The Samoset Resort in Rockport is about to begin the final step of a renovation project that's been years in the making.
" The original Samoset was built in 1889 and it burned down in 1972 and the structure that we're in today was built in 1974," said Connie Russell, general manager of the Samoset Resort.
The resort has been under its current ownership since 1999. In that time, millions of dollars have been spent on renovations, including upgrades of all three floors of guest rooms.
"This past winter, we extended that and upgraded our luxurious suites including six hot tub suites. We also added a new fleet of golf cart vehicles and our Flume Cottage has been completely restored which is down on the ocean," said Russell.
Now, they're at it again. At the end of the month, more than $1-million will be spent converting the two current restaurants into one restaurant and lounge.
"We're also adding a six room treatment spa which will overlook the ocean, both the restaurant and the spa," said Russell.
Russelll says while the changes are good for guests, they also benefit the community as local contractors are doing the work.
"I think it's definitely important to reinvest in the local economy and support the local community."
The goal is to have the makeover complete by next summer.
