Unity -
The Common Ground Country Fair is this weekend in Unity. The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association serves as host with gates opening at 9a.m. on Friday. It's the 34th year for the fair.
The fair director tells us more than 50,000 people attended last year. This year more than seven hundred participants, from artisans to entertainers will have a spot on the 40-acre lot.
Organic gardening and agriculture are at the core of the event and it takes a couple thousand volunteers each year to pull it together. Jim Ahearne says, "The scary thing for me as a fair director is that we rely almost entirely on volunteers to set this up so we're very dependent upon who walks in through the door, but I'm constantly amazed by who walks through that door." He says licensed electricians, plumbers, carpenters, painters and cooks have all stepped up and shared their skills.
