Etna - Police are investigating a car crash on the highway near Etna that seriously injured a mother from Newport, but left her baby daughter unhurt.

Troopers say 34-year-old Shannon Smith was heading south on I-95 about 6:30 Tuesday morning. Her mini van went off the road and hit a guardrail twice, then ran into in the woods.

We're told smith was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown out of the van. She was flown to a hospital in Bangor.

Trooper Darrin Vittum says Smith's two-month old daughter was strapped in an infant car seat and was not injured.

"One of the passer-bys that had just happened to have passed her, pulled over and assisted getting the baby out of the car."

Vittum tells us Smith suffered broken bones and head injuries but it appears she's going to survive.

Eastern Maine Medical Center has no information on her condition.

Vittum says it appears Smith was probably distracted by the baby but may have dozed off, before she drove off the road.
