The National Weather Service says the weakening Hurricane Earl will become a tropical storm by the time it makes landfall in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

In eastern Maine, where Hancock and Washington counties are under a tropical storm warning, gusts of up to 45 mph akin to a nor'easter are anticipated Saturday morning.

Meterologist Mark Bloomer in Caribou says the bigger concern is the surf that's expected to hit 14 feet by mid-day Saturday, after the storm passes by. Bloomer says people near the coast will need to keep a safe distance from the surf to avoid the pounding waves.

For now, only the two counties are under any sort of warning. A tropical storm watch is in effect Hancock County to Cape Elizabeth.- AP
