The Maine Forest Service has issued an emergency order banning out-of-state firewood.
The order was signed leading up to this Labor Day weekend in an effort to protect Maine woodlands from the spread of destructive insects such as the asian longhorned beetle and emerald ash borer.
The longhorned beetle has destroyed swaths of trees in Massachusetts, while the ash borer has been found in nearby Canadian provinces, but neither has been confirmed in Maine.
Firewood is a common way for the insects to be transported.
