Verona Island -
A body shop owner on Verona Island is going to have to rebuild.
Around one o'clock Monday afternoon, crews were called to Newcomb Auto Body for reports of a fire.
An employee was inside working on a vehicle when the fire started.
Eyewitnesses say once it started, it didn't take long before flames and smoke were visible through the roof and walls.
" All the sudden we hear a couple of pops and we turned to look at Newcomb Auto Body and there is fire spewing out the side of the building," said eyewitness Joseph Goodin. " and so I decided oh I should probably call 911 so I call but I was the second person to call so we decided to get inside and within five minutes the roof was on fire and there's paint cans shooting out the side."
" Once the rest of us got here just a few minutes time and all the responding departments it was obvious that it was going to have to be defensive," said Bucksport Fire Department Safety Officer Capt Terry Grindle. " Auto body shop with a lot of combustibles, a lot of danger."
The owner tells us he is insured and plans to rebuild.
The employee was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure for smoke inhalation.
The Fire Marshal's office has been contacted to determine the cause, but no foul play is suspected.
Crews from Bucksport, Orland, Prospect and Orrington all responded.
