Fort Kent -
The first woman to complete the 740 mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail alone has laid down her paddles and pulled her kayak out of the water after finishing the landmark trip yesterday.
Cathy Mumford, a 50 year old mother from New Jersey, started the trip June 19th in New York and paddled through Vermont, southern Quebec and New Hampshire before ending in Fort Kent.
She was joined for certain parts of the trip by friends and family but says a big reason she embarked on the journey was to spend some time alone.
"You know I was at a crossroads in my life, I was going through all kinds of changes and I kind of wanted to be alone to think and I wanted to do something that would be good for me. I was nervous a lot in the beginning, then towards the middle I stopped being nervous about everything and the peace and beauty and serenity were really nice."
Mumford says the most challenging part of the trip was the physical exhaustion but credits much of her success to experience and planning.
