The Maine Department of Transportation says it could seal a deal to preserve more than 200 miles of railroad tracks in Aroostook county in a matter of weeks.
Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway and the Maine DOT are in negotiations over the deal that state officials say could save more than 1700 jobs.
The company asked last winter to abandon the tracks, saying it was losing 4 to 5 million dollars on a year on that line.
The state plans to buy the tracks and lease them to an operator that would keep freight moving.
