Pickleball is picking up momentum in Central Maine as a sport. What is it? According to the USA Pickleball Association it's a fun game that is played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. Pickleball players say it's easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.
Mike and Nancy Gallagher have started up a club at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville. The couple says they've had about a dozen people playing in the three weeks since they've introduced the sport to the area.
If you're interested in taking a swing at pickleball games are played at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville on Wednesdays from 9am-11am.
